Seasonal Depression
In Denmark, the winter months are marked by darkness and very little sunlight, and this affects me to the point where I feel like I’m slipping into a black hole. It shows up as wanting to sleep all the time and becoming easily upset or sad. When I start noticing these symptoms, I know it’s time to use my Lumie Brazil light therapy lamp along with my BLS treatments and to make sure I get 150 minutes of exercise per week. Seasonal depression – also known as SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) – typically occurs during the darker months of the year. It is mainly caused by a lack of daylight, which affects the body’s internal clock and the production of the hormones melatonin and serotonin. Melatonin is the body’s sleep hormone, and in darker periods it can be produced in excess, making you feel unusually tired.
